Boerum Hill staple that has earned a reputation well beyond the neighborhood for its raw bar and eclectic changing cocktails. The kind of bar that a neighborhood keeps to itself for a while before the rest of the city figures it out. The cocktail list changes with genuine intention — not just seasonal theater. The oysters alongside a well-made drink is one of the better early evening decisions you can make in South Brooklyn.

Craft cocktails and bordello-inspired decor — the combination sounds like a theme restaurant and instead is one of the most genuinely enjoyable bars on Smith Street. The massive backyard garden is easily one of the best outdoor drinking spots in the neighborhood. Happy hour Monday through Thursday 5 to 7pm. The kind of place you discover and then keep to yourself for as long as possible.

A former private Sicilian social club — Society Riposto — opened to the public in 2004 and has been serving the neighborhood properly ever since. The photos of original members from the 1920s still line the walls. The antique clock still ticks. The curved deco bar is the whole room. Simple twists on classics: the Brooklyn, the Ginger Old Fashioned, the Fellini. The Village Voice called it the best bar in Carroll Gardens. They weren't wrong. Go on a Tuesday.

Botanica at Widow Jane is a distillery bar that highlights the neighborhood's whiskey heritage with expertly crafted bourbon and rye cocktails alongside unique flights. The kind of bar that exists because someone genuinely cared about the product before they thought about the concept. The walk through Red Hook to get there is part of the evening.
