Six dog-friendly parks, four dedicated off-leash runs, and one premium waterfront destination. Everything you need to know about living in Gowanus with your dog — from someone who works this neighborhood every day.
One of the most common questions I get from prospective residents considering Gowanus isn't about square footage or concessions. It's about their dog. Is this neighborhood actually livable with a dog? Are there good parks nearby? What's the closest off-leash run?
After spending the better part of two years leasing in this corridor, I can answer all of that. Here's the complete picture.
Dog Runs & Green Space
The Parks Worth Knowing
Gowanus sits at the intersection of four strong Brooklyn neighborhoods — Carroll Gardens, Park Slope, Cobble Hill, and Red Hook — which means your dog's territory is significantly larger than the neighborhood itself. Here's what's actually accessible from the building.
⭐ Closest Dog Run — 5 Min Walk
Two sections for big and small dogs. AstroTurf surface. Separate water fountains. Quietest between 6–7:30am before the morning crowd arrives. The go-to for weekday runs.
Top Rated Dog Run — 10 Min Walk
Spacious, shaded, dirt and grass surface. Strong community of regulars. Water fountains on site. The highest rated in the immediate area — worth the extra five minutes. Note: berry trees on site, watch your dog around them.
Dog Run — 15 Min Walk
Enclosed and fully fenced. Dirt surface — expect a dusty dog after a good session. Friendly community, good for social breeds that like room to run.
Neighborhood Park — 8 Min Walk
One of Carroll Gardens' most loved parks. Sunday farmers market. Dog-friendly open space with great neighborhood energy. The morning walk crowd here is a whole community.
Neighborhood Park — 18 Min Walk
Charming, well-kept and very dog-friendly. Pair it with a walk through Cobble Hill's brownstone streets and you have one of the best evening routines in Brooklyn.
🏆 Premium Destination — 25 Min Walk / 10 Min Citi Bike
AstroTurf surface. Manhattan Bridge views. One of the nicest dog runs in all of Brooklyn. This is the weekend destination — plan for 45 to 60 minutes and bring a coffee for the walk over.
Insider Knowledge
Making the Most of Gowanus With Your Dog
1
Early Morning Sweet Spot
Washington Park Dog Run opens at 6am and is quietest between 6 and 7:30am. Perfect for a quick morning run before the workday with minimal crowds and maximum space for your dog to actually run.
2
Weekend Destination
Pier 6 at Brooklyn Bridge Park is the premium weekend outing — AstroTurf, waterfront views, and a great community of dog owners. The walk over through Columbia Street Waterfront is itself worth it. Plan for 45 to 60 minutes minimum.
3
The Carroll Gardens Evening Loop
The tree-lined blocks of Carroll Gardens between Smith and Court Street are among the most beautiful walking streets in Brooklyn. A 20-minute evening loop through here with your dog is one of Gowanus's best-kept quality of life secrets.
4
Rainy Day Option
DiMattina Dog Run in Red Hook has the most shade coverage and a dirt-grass surface that handles light rain better than most. Note: it can get muddy in heavy rain. Bring a towel and budget for a post-visit wipe-down.
5
Prospect Park Off-Leash Hours
About 20 minutes by walk or a quick Citi Bike ride. Dogs are allowed off-leash in designated areas before 9am and after 9pm. The Dog Beach on the east side of the park is a summer favorite for water-loving dogs — and genuinely one of the best things about living within range of this park.
The Citi Bike station near the building makes Pier 6 and Prospect Park significantly more accessible. If you're a dog owner moving to Gowanus, a Citi Bike membership pays for itself in the first month.
